Tamale Hospital Workers On Strike

Mon, 2 Jun 2003 Source: .

Health workers at the Tamale Teaching hospital have begun a strike action to protest against deplorable conditions under which they work. According to the striking workers, the hospital’s structures are in a deplorable state, making the only Teaching Hospital in the northern sector unfit for work and the treatment of patients.

Patients at the hospital are being discharged prematurely and new admissions rejected. A source close to the hospital told Joy FM that medical students from the University of Development studies were not allowed in for their practical lessons.

The source said the workers who are determined to continue with their action are surprised at the fact that no action is being taken to renovate and equip the hospital despite several appeals.

The health workers contend that funds have been set aside for the project but there are still no signs of renovation taking place. Hospital authorities and the leadership of the health workers have been meeting to get the workers to resume work.
