Tamale Schools To Adopt Shift System

Mon, 20 Oct 1997 Source: --

Tamale, (Northern Region) 16 Oct.,

Community schools in the Tamale municipality lacking sufficient accommodation for a full day's tuition are to adopt the shift system. The decision was taken at a meeting between the Municipal Oversight Committee and the Tamale Municipal Basic Education Parent- Teachers Association, unit heads, regional managers of education and circuit supervisors at Tamale today. Mr. Leonard Takora Tingbani, Tamale Municipal Director of Education, said one of the aims of the F-CUBE programme is to step up enrolment in schools, adding that since the Northern Region has about 53 per cent of its children not attending school, every effort should be made to encourage parents to send their wards to school. Mr. Tingbani said there is now an increase in enrolment in the municipality, especially at the basic level, and this has thus over- stretched the infrastructure. Some classes have as many as between 105 pupils. ''The situation is so appalling that it does not allow for effective teaching, resulting in inadequate supervision of the pupils, thus reducing efficiency of both the teacher and the pupil.
