It has emerged that the public lashing of a girl in a village near Tamale in the Northern region was sanctioned by the chief of the community.
The barbaric action was, according to Starr News sources, ordered by the chief of Shishegu in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region
New reports suggest the lady was being whipped because she had allegedly converted her room in the family house to a brothel.
The yet-to-be-identified lady believed to be in her mid-twenties was seen in the video held to a table by some men and flogged repeatedly on her back.
The excruciating episode took place in a compound and was being witnessed by some elderly women and children in the house of the same family.
Speaking to Francis Abban on the matter again on Thursday, DSP Emmanuel Holortu of the Tamale Police said even though the chief was wrong in ordering the punishment, the Police can still not act until the victim files a complaint.
“We still don’t have the details on the flogging. Without the victim, we don’t have a case. In criminal cases, we investigate and when someone has violated the law, we deal with the person. The victim is a principal witness. We need her in order to pursue the case. Even if the young lady is using her room as a brothel, the Chief doesn’t have the right to order that she is flogged”.
