Sunyani (B/A United) -- A shocked Sunyani Circuit Court last Tuesday heard how a teacher at the Wemfie SDA JSS in the Brong Ahafo Region defiled his 13-year-old daughter under the instructions if an oracle in order to become rich overnight.The accused, Christopher Quarcoe, claimed that an oracle ordered him to have sex with either his sister or daughter in accordance with rituals he had agreed to perform in order to achieve the objective.
The court, presided over by Mr G. H. K. Debrah, did not take his plea and remanded him into prison custody to re-appear on June 2, to enable the police to complete their investigations.The prosecutor, ASP Alex Yartey Tawiah, said on April 7 this year, the victim wrote a letter to her mother, who lived at Badu-Kintampo, warning that if her mother did not come for her and she died the mother should not attend her funeral.
ASP Yartey Tawiah said the victim accidentally left the letter in the room and the accused chanced over it. He said the accused then gave the letter to a co-tenant, who is a witness in the case, to read and afterwards asked the victim why she wrote the letter.ASP Yartey Tawiah said when the witness interviewed the victim, she explained that she wanted her mother to rescue her from her father, who sexually abuses her every night when they go to sleep.
He said when the accused was questioned, he confessed to having defiled his daughter, adding that he acted in accordance with a juju he had made in order to get rich quick.The ASP said the accused further confessed to the witness that the oracle from which he sought the assistance instructed him to have carnal knowledge of either his sister or daughter before the juju would work.
According to the prosecutor, the accused stated that because getting access to his daughter would be easier than his sister, he opted for the daughter. He said humiliated by the event, the accused, on May 9 2003, gave an amount of ?80,000 to one Frank Kwasi to send the victim to her mother at Badu-Kintampo.
ASP Yartey Tawiah said a concerned person heard the story and informed Radio BAR at Sunyani and a formal complaint was made to the Women and Juvenile Unit of the Ghana Police Service at Sunyani.He said when the accused heard that the police were on his heels, he went into hiding and on May 21 gave himself up in the company of his lawyer.
