Teacher remanded for causing harm

A 37-year-old teacher, Kenneth Bonga, was on Thursday remanded into police custody by a Cape Coast circuit court for allegedly riding an unregistered motorbike and causing harm to a police dispatch rider.

Bonga, who was also charged with riding without license, dangerous cycling and the use of motorbike without registration, pleaded not guilty and will reappear on April 16.

Police Chief Inspector Emmanuel Ofori told the court presided over by Ms. Florence Okai Otu that on February 10, General Lance Corporal George Kpordzo was riding a motorbike leading Dr. Sarpong’s motorcade from Cape Coast to Apam for a function.

On reaching Biriwa, the motorcade met a Nissan Urvan bus driven by one Paul Nyarko which was followed by the accused on an unregistered Yamaha motorbike.

Nyarko slowed down and moved to the edge of the road to give way to the motorcade, but Bonga, who was directly behind the bus, suddenly overtook it and crossed into the lane of the motorcade.

He said the dispatch rider attempted to avoid Bonga and in the process fell into a ditch.

Chief Inspector Ofori said, Kpordzo sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

He said Bonga tried to escape, but was arrested and handed over to the police. It was detected during investigations that Bonga’s riding license had expired since November 2013, the motor bike was not insured and it had no roadworthy certificate.
