Teachers advised to eschew vices

Sekondi, Dec. 19, GNA - Mrs. Rebecca E. Dadzie, Western Regional Director of Education, on Thursday urged teachers to avoid alcoholism, lateness, absenteeism and other vices that could affect the image of the teaching profession.

She said that teachers were expected to play significant roles in the development of their respective communities. Mrs. Dadzie gave the advice at the 2007-2008 Best Teacher/ Non-Teaching Staff awards ceremony, organised by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan and Shama District of the Ghana Education service, on the theme "Quality education, teacher matters", at Sekondi. She asked teachers to upgrade their skills and knowledge to enhance teaching and learning.

Mrs Dadzie appealed to individuals and organisations to assist teachers with accommodation and means of transport to enable them to work effectively.

In all 12 teachers and five non-teaching staff from the metropolis and district received prizes ranging from television sets, radio cassette player, refrigerators and gas cookers. Ms. Bernice B. Zottor of the Ntankorful Metropolitan Assembly Junior High School (JHS) was the over all best teacher in the primary school category for the 2007 while Mr. Listowel Asare Abanquah of Gethsemane JHS was the overall best teacher for 2008.
