Takoradi, Jan. 4, GNA - The Western Regional Chairman of the Ghana Association of Science Teachers, Mr. Richard Hoenyefia, has said the government's vision of achieving 90 percent local content and local participation in the oil and gas industry within a decade would be a mirage if teaching of science and technology in schools was relegated to the background.
He appealed to science teachers in pre-tertiary institutions to demystify the notion surrounding the study of science as difficult subject. Mr. Hoenyefia said this at the opening ceremony of the Science, Technology and Innovation camp for selected students in the Western Region in Takoradi.
The theme for the camp was “Science, Technology and Innovation for better Ghana". He said science and technology education had not been given attention over the years and policy makers had also not devoted special attention and resources to the subject.
"The method of teaching of Science and Technology in some of our schools leaves much to be desired and many students perceive Science subjects as difficult probably as a result of the approach that is used in teaching".
Mr. Hoenyefia said GAST had taken note of the trend and it was in the process of addressing some of these challenges and appealed to other stakeholders to come on board.
