Teachers express discontent about Teacher Awards

Kumasi, June 16, GNA - The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has expressed dissatisfaction with the mode of selection for best teacher awards and appealed to the selection committee to actively involve TEWU in the process of selection.

Miss Augustina Adomako, President of Ashanti Regional Women's Wing of TEWU expressed the concern at the 2008 Kumasi Metropolitan Teachers Awards Day.

Twenty-two teachers and non-teaching staff were awarded and presented with items including gas cookers, table top refrigerators, television sets, rice cookers and wall clocks.

Miss Adomako said he was not happy that some hardworking non-teaching staff, including kitchen staff, librarians, watchmen and labourers were not covered in the awards.

She said non-teaching staffs contribute immensely towards the nation's educational delivery adding "They must be recognized as partners in development and not as mere supporters".

Mr. J K Adu, the Kumasi Metropolitan Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers, reiterated the association's concern about the slow pace in the implementation of the single spine salary and the national Pension Law.

The development of the nation, Mr Adu said, largely depended on education and teachers must be given their fair share of the national cake.
