Teaching Assistants not paid for eight months

Thu, 3 Feb 2011 Source: GNA

Suhum, Feb 03, GNA - Fifty Teaching Assistants employed

under the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) in the

Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District had not been paid for the past eight

months. Mr Joseph Brafo, a Teaching Assistant, told the GNA after a

emergency meeting the teachers held at Sowatey near Suhum on

Thursday that apart from not receiving their allowances they had

also not been issued with appointment letters. Mr Brafo said the National Secretariat was also demanding that

every Teaching Assistant should pay GH¢10 every month from their

allowances. He said anytime the District Coordinator of the scheme, Mr

David Livingstone, was contacted he would tell them that the

government had released the money to the banks awaiting

disbursement but when the banks were contacted they denied

receiving any money. Mr Brafo said most of the Teaching Assistants just completed

schooling and had no sources of income and that some of them had

to travel long distances to teach. He said due to that unfortunate situation some landlords had

threatened to eject the Teaching Assistants from their rented

premises.
