Teaching Resources for Africa Supports University of Ghana

Accra, March 18, GNA - Professor Kwadwo Asenso - Okyere, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana on Friday expressed the need to emphasize science and technology education at the tertiary level.

He said opportunities to offer science courses in second cycle institutions were more than that of the tertiary institutions and that it was necessary to put in place adequate logistics to enhance the teaching of the subject.

Professor Asenso - Okyere stated that only few students from the secondary schools were admitted into the university due to insufficient facilities at the tertiary level.

"Science and technology are essential but to encourage the subject, some facilities have to be put in place and teachers need to be assisted."

Professor Asenso-Okyere said this during a donation of books and journals worth 10,000 U S dollars from the Teaching Resources for Africa, an NGO based in Berkeley, California to the department of Biochemistry at the University. He said the donation would go a long way to help deliver quality science education adding there were plans to put up a permanent building for the Biochemistry department he added. He said the three-storey building, which would be supported by the GETFUND, would comprise biochemistry, general science departments and a laboratory.

He thanked Dr. Jonathan Agyemang, a lecturer at the university who after graduating from the university of California arranged with the NGO to assist the university of Ghana.

Making the donation, Mr. Isaac Ferguson, Area Welfare Manager of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints, the organizers who help ship the books said the donation was part of an ongoing programme of which 700 first and second cycle institutions in the country have benefited.

He urged the students to make good use of the books and also handle them with great care to make it possible for use by generations to come.
