Teaching profession is not a hobby -- Headteacher

Tokokoe, (V/R), July 22, GNA-The Head-teacher of Tokokoe L.A. Junior Secondary School, near Ho, Mr. Felix Nyagamagu has urged teachers who take the teaching profession as a hobby to turn on a new leaf. "Leaving the classroom for days and even weeks is a disservice to mankind," he said.

Mr Nyagamagu made the appeal at a speech and prize-giving day of the school on Wednesday under the theme, "Quality Education; key to success in life".

He reminded teachers that they held the future of their pupils in their hands.

Mr Nyagamagu also urged parents in the community to encourage their wards to forgo the pleasures of spending all their time watching television instead of reading library books stocked by the school. He also appealed to the Ho Municipal Assembly to provide the school with a computer laboratory in which to install 14 computers donated to the school by Mr Dennis Van der Heihen a Dutch volunteer teacher who taught in the school.

Mr Nyagamagu said the computers are lying idle in the private rooms of a traditional ruler. He thanked the Municipal Assembly for providing the school with a 21-inch television set for use in distance learning.

Responding to the appeal, Mr. Jonathan Klu, the Municipal Planning Officer said the Assembly was ready to support the community if it initiated work on the construction of a computer laboratory. He said the computers are valuable assets to the community because of the importance of computer literacy towards higher academic and professional pursuits in the country.
