Technical University students give government 2 weeks to constitute councils

The Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS), has given the government of Ghana a two-week ultimatum within which to form the various governing councils to facilitate the smooth running of the institutions.

In a statement jointly signed by the Coordinating Secretary, Abdul Rahman Ibrahim and Prince Awuku, the Union’s Public Relations Officer, they observed that the absence of the governing councils is significantly hampering the smooth operations of these institutions.

According to the duo, students who have successfully completed their programmes of study for a year now have no certificates due to the inability of the Institutions to organize graduation ceremonies to award them with certificates, a mandate they claimed is solely the preserve of a governing council.

The statement, which lamented the absence of the governing council, said the fate of these innocent students is in a limbo whilst authorities sit unconcerned.

THE GHANA NATIONAL UNION OF TECHNICAL STUDENTS (GNUTS) GIVES GOVERNMENT A TWO-WEEK ULTIMATUM TO FORM THE GOVERNING COUNCILS OF TECHNICAL UNIVERSITIES /POLYTECHNICS

The Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS), formerly, Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) is utterly disappointed in the failure of government to put up the governing Councils of the various Technical Universities and Polytechnics in the country.

The absence of the governing Councils is significantly hampering the smooth operations of these institutions. Students who have successfully completed their programmes of study for a year now have no certificates due to the inability of these Institutions to organize graduation ceremonies to award certificates. This, of course, is as result of the absence of a governing Council, which has that mandate.

The fate of these innocent students remains in limbo whilst authorities sit unconcerned. This is absolutely unacceptable and we demand that the right be done as immediate as possible. It is also worthy of note that, a lot of these graduates are at the verge of finishing their national service and get into the world of work.

It would be recalled that sometime on May 2, 2017, we petitioned the Ministry of Education and copied to the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) to as a matter of urgency, facilitate the formation of the governing Councils of the Technical Universities and Polytechnics. We regret to say that till now, we have received no positive response from government.

In view of the foregoing, the Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS) is by this statement, giving government, a TWO-WEEK ULTIMATUM to put up and inaugurate the governing Councils of the Technical Universities and Polytechnics in the country, else we shall be compelled to advise ourselves. Education is a RIGHT and must remain so.
