Tell Ghanaians More About HIPC -CPP

Sat, 1 May 2004 Source: --

The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Convention People?s Party (CPP), Mr Francis Jantuah, has challenged the NPP government to be truthful about the conditionalties associated with the HIPC initiative. This, he said, would give Ghanaians the opportunity to properly access the rationale for the adoption of the HIPC initiative.

He said conditions were attached to the HIPC initiative which required the sale of state owned enterprises, and noted that this did not augur well for the development of the industrial sector of the country. Mr Jantuah, who was a minister in the Nkrumah regime, was speaking at a durbar organised by the CPP to mark the 32nd anniversary of the death of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah in Kumasi.

He said the initiative did not come with any benefit as was being propagated, stressing that the CPP would reclaim state owned enterprises when voted into power in the impending presidential elections.

?A good public enterprise policy by a country facilitates development of industries; therefore, the industries being sold by the present government will not promote industrialisation in the country,? Mr Jantuah said.

The Regional Chairman of the party, Mr Osei Tutu Bonsu, said the CPP stood for unity and added that unity had propelled the country to its present status. He, therefore, appealed to any political party, claiming to be a true representative of Dr Nkrumah to unite with the CPP.

He also called on Ghanaians to vote massively for the party in the forthcoming elections so that the CPP could continue the works of Dr Nkrumah.A Member of the Regional Committee, Mr Akwasi Prempeh, urged all Ghanaians to support the National Reconciliation Commission in its efforts to reconcile Ghanaians.

He said that in order to ensure that the exercise achieved results, Ghanaians must ensure that it was devoid of acrimony, adding that, ?those who go to the commission and personally attack people are not helping the commission?.
