Tema ECG is poised to improve power supply - Director

Tema, Feb. 20, GNA - The Tema Regional Branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has initiated a number of projects estimated at 80 million Ghana cedis to improve power supply within the metropolis. Mr Felix Fiebor, Regional Director of ECG, who disclosed this at the Meet the Press in Tema, said under a French credit, the construction of fou= r sub-stations at Kpone, Community 25, Santeo and Afienya/Mobole, which were on-going, would cost ECG 18.4 Million Ghana cedis.

Mr Fiebor said the construction of the Smelter Two Bulk Supply Point a= t New Tema and Nungua, also on-going, would cost the Company an additional 8.= 2 million Ghana cedis. He said other on-going projects include the construction of the Akuse Junction Switching Station and Primary Sub-Stations at Dawhenya, New Nungua and Kpone Industrial Area, all estimated at eight million Ghana cedis. Mr Fiebor said by the end of the year, 95 per cent of existing credit meters for ECG's 95,440 customer population in the Tema Metropolis would be replaced with pre-paid meters. He expressed concern about power theft or illegal connections, and sai= d the company's total assessment from January to December 2010 stood at 1,018,617.51 Ghana cedis and that as at February 18 this year, as much as 729,286.88 Ghana cedis of that total amount had been paid, leaving a balanc= e of 289,330.63 Ghana cedis.

Mr Fiebor urged the public to volunteer information for the arrest of people involved in power theft, assuring informants that a reward of six pe= r cent of all illegal units recovered would be paid to them. He also urged the public to see ECG's assets as their own and help protect them pledging the company's preparedness to restore outage incidences as and when they occurred.
