Tema, April 01, GNA - Two workers of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on late Saturday sustained serious burns on their bodies while working on a faulty electrical cable which caught fire at the main Tema Station 93H" where Tema receives its source of power supply from the Volta River Authority (VRA).
The injured, Mr James Narh and Mr Anthony Adofo were rushed to the Korle Bu hospital while two others were treated and discharged at the Narh Bitah hospital in Tema.
The explosion destroyed part of the panel and the 33 kilovolts circuit breaker beyond repairs, including some louver blades. The accident resulted in almost a whole day of power outage thus denying several consumers of power supply.
Fire personnel from the Tema office of the National Fire Service, Tema Oil Refinery and the VRA were quick at hand to put the fire under the control.
The cause of the explosion was immediately not known but top officials of the Tema ECG say it is being investigated.
In a realated development, luck run out of a young man believed to be in his forties who in an attempt to excavate some of the cables was electrocuted about 500 meters away from the station where the incident took place.
Some people around told the GNA that the man had succeeded in cutting three of the underground cables and in attempt to cut the fourth one the power was energized resulting in his electrocution. Police men and other officials from the ECG and the VRA were present to control the situation.
