Tema, Sept. 19, GNA - The Tema Police Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU), has prosecuted 766 traffic cases from January to August this year, with the offenders convicted to fines totalling 698,400.000 cedis.

Their offences included parking at unauthorised places, picking passengers at unauthorised places and causing road obstruction and failing to place reflectors at both the front and back of their vehicles.

A statement from the Regional Police Public Affairs Unit signed by its head, Chief Inspector Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, indicated that a total of 13 million cedis was also imposed on seven drivers who were convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol during the same period. Chief Inspector Nketia-Yeboah said three drivers who were arrested for driving with under-weight driving license were sentenced to a total fine of 2.3 million cedis, whilst two articulated truck drivers who were arrested on the Motorway for loading above the approved height of 11 feet, were also fined a total sum of four million cedis.

He appealed to drivers and transport owners to maintain their vehicles and abide by road traffic regulations to reduce the spate of road accidents.

"As we are approaching the last quarter of the year, the Police will mount special operations to weed out rickety vehicles and unqualified drivers off our roads and also prosecute offenders", he warned.
