Structures mounted at unauthorised places have been demolished
Residents of Tema are facing growing anxiety as bulldozers continue to raze homes, shops, and container businesses across the municipality.
The demolitions, carried out by the Tema Development Corporation (TDC), have left families displaced and traders without livelihoods, sparking outrage among affected communities.
Abraham Koomson, Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), has condemned the exercise, warning that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) risks paying a heavy political price in the 2028 general elections if the demolitions persist.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Koomson cautioned that the demolitions were eroding public trust in the government.
“The way this demolition is being carried out is dangerous. If care is not taken, there could be a revolt, and it will go against the NDC. People do not vote for a government to make their lives miserable,” he said.

He added that the NDC could lose all its parliamentary seats in Tema if the exercise continues unchecked.
“By 2028, they will lose everything. The NDC will not have any footing in Tema if this continues. Whoever is behind the encouragement of these demolitions must stop it,” Koomson added.
Koomson also criticised the lack of coordination between the TDC and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), particularly in the issuance of building and structural permits.
He argued that both institutions represent the government and must harmonise their processes to avoid punishing residents.
“TDC and TMA need to come together and agree on how they will handle the issuance of permits. They both represent the government, so there must be proper coordination,” he said.
He further urged authorities to shift their focus from demolishing properties to addressing pressing challenges such as unreliable water supply and malfunctioning traffic lights, which he said were more urgent concerns for residents.
