Tema, Jan 17, GNA -- The Tema Municipality in 2007 registered a total of 2,779 customary and ordinance marriages as against a total of 156 divorces. The Tema Municipal Marriage and Divorce Registry under the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) recorded 2,605 and 174 ordinance and customary marriages respectively. Mr. Stephen Nortey, Tema Municipal Marriage Registrar told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that there was an increase in marriages last year as the outfit registered 2,700 couples in 2006. He further said the customary divorce register also recorded an increase from 12 in 2006 to 32 last year. Meanwhile records made available to the GNA by the Tema Circuit Court 'A' indicated that 124 ordinance divorces were handled from January to August, 2007. Mr Nortey said incompatibility of couples and financial problems among others were some of the common reasons given by couples seeking divorces. He therefore advised would-be spouses not to base their marriage only on love and age but should acquire some knowledge about it before entering into it. "Just as we need proper education on our various professions, couples need to acquire knowledge of what marriage is all about before embarking on that journey", he added.
