Workers of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) held a press conference on September 10, 2024, to demand better working conditions.

According to the staff, their issues revolve around several ongoing disputes with management that remain unresolved.

One concern raised by the staff was the illegal withholding of their union chairman's salary over alleged absenteeism.

The staff also demanded immediate payment of allowances meant for the seventy-seven workers who worked at the African Games. According to the workers, management agreed to pay GH¢100 daily to each of the workers who worked on the project, but this has not been fulfilled.

The Local Union Chairman, Sam Nat, expressed disappointment in the management.

“They started with 50 cedis negotiations. Then, under the tree here, we met with the management team. They came back to GH¢70. I am presenting the disagreement of agreeing with management on behalf of the workers.

“We wrote to management on the 26th of August, asking them to provide the list and amount of payment made. It is not in our domain to be coming here to be telling this issue to management. I have a special respect for our Director General, but he doesn’t appreciate it. That is the most painful thing.

“We are demanding compensation, having realized that money in excess of three million dollars was paid,” 3news.com quoted him to have said during the press conference.

However, the General Secretary of the Public Services Workers Union, Benard Adjei, has pleaded with the workers to be patient as management has already taken steps to address their concerns in the coming weeks.

“The African Games, yes, I have heard issues about your workplaces, such as not having equipment, people sleeping in the offices, and allowances not being paid. Per this action that we have taken today, the DG has committed to us that we should agree on a date for a meeting for the issues to be addressed,” he stated.
