Tension Brews At Agogo

Wed, 10 Oct 2001 Source: Chronicle

Concerns over mounting tension at Agogo and its surrounding areas have prompted members of the Asante Akim North District Assembly to sound the alarm bell to the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to avert a possible clash between natives and Fulani herdsmen.

To ensure quick response, the Assembly members have unanimously agreed to send an urgent resolution to REGSEC to do something about the simmering tension or face being side-lined and a report made directly to the National Security Council.

This decision was arrived at during the Assembly's sitting on Tuesday, October 2 at Konongo following a motion tabled by Opanin Kwadwo Duro, Assembly member for Abrewapong on behalf of his colleagues from the area.

According to Duro and his colleagues, tension is at its peak due to the terrorizing activities of the Fulani herdsmen, who are said to be armed to the teeth and are trigger-happy, thus rendering some of the areas a no-go zone.

With their droves of 67,000 cattle wreaking havoc, the farmers and hunters, according to the members report, now go unarmed or conceal their guns for fear of being seen by the Fulanis and used as target practice.

The Assembly, chaired by its Presiding Member, Mr. George Kyei Baafour, expressed its frustration over the inability of REGSEC to either drive away or disarm the herdsmen so as to ensure the security of the natives.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. George Frimpong, however, defended REGSEC saying that the security body had deliberated on the issue for at least ten times this year, and urged the members to advise their electorate to exercise restraint and remain calm.

A new policy of setting up an Integrated Resource Centre, aimed at helping to sustain Agriculture and support education in the district was made known to the Assembly members.

Members commended Mr. Andy Appea-Kubi, a citizen of Yuansa on his pledge to sponsor one best student to either pursue his or her education in the United States or the United Kingdom.

The Assembly is also planning to sponsor the best teacher to complement his efforts.
