Tensions have flared in the Northern Region following the alleged establishment of a new market at Kulkpeni by the Konkomba and Kulkpeni communities.

The move comes in the wake of a deadly communal clash in Zogbei, in the Mion District, two weeks ago, which claimed over seven lives, citinewsroom.com reports.

In response to the recent violence, military forces have been deployed to the area to prevent further escalation, the report added.

The deployment took place on Saturday, August 17, amid fears of renewed unrest.

The controversy began when the Konkombas in the Mion District decided to boycott the Mion Market and create their own market in Kulkpeni, a community near Yendi.

This decision has significantly heightened tensions between the Yendi and Mion districts, with residents from both areas threatening to forcibly shut down the newly-established Kulkpeni Market.

Despite efforts by the Yendi Municipal Security Council to urge that proper procedures be followed to officially open the market, these attempts have so far been unsuccessful, the report said.

With Friday, August 23, being a scheduled market day, concerns over potential violence led to the deployment of military forces to ensure peace and prevent any unrests.
