Tepa (Ash), Feb 6, GNA - Two farmers, Yaw Boateng and Kwadwo Okyere, who on January 20 assaulted a teacher at Subriso near Tepa in Ashanti for punishing a JSS pupil were on Friday fined 500,000 cedis each.

In addition, the court ordered them to compensate the teacher with four million cedis each. In default, they will serve 12 months' imprisonment in hard labour.

They pleaded guilty to the charge.

In an interview with reporters after the court ruling, some of the teachers who were present expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the case but said they will return to classes only after they have received assurance from the community of their safety.

Police Inspector Francis Asante had told the court, presided over by Mr Sam Kwaku Alomatu, that on January 20, this year, Ebenezer Adjei, a teacher at Subriso JSS punished some pupils who were absent when the school re-opened on Wednesday, January 11.

The prosecution said one of the pupils, Beatrice Dankwa, reported the case to his brother, Yaw Boateng, who together with his friend, Kwadwo Okyere, went and assaulted the teacher and threatened others.
