The Attorney General, Godfred Dame, has stated that the Supreme Court is the sole authority on all matters, including the interpretation of the Constitution.

Dame stated that the Supreme Court’s ruling leaves no room for doubt or questioning, on the vacant parliamentary seats case.

According to him, the highest court of the land must be recognised and accorded the respect it deserves when it issues a ruling.

Dame made this known while addressing the media on November 12, 2024, after the Supreme Court overruled Bagbin’s decision.

“In this country, we must recognise some people for who they are and what they do. This hypocrisy and double standards must cease. The Supreme Court is the final arbiter on all matters in the country, including an interpretation of the Constitution.”

He added, “It is the only court that solely sees jurisdiction to pronounce on the meaning of provisions in the Constitution. The Constitution means what the Supreme Court says it means and nothing more. It is the same in America and advanced democracies, and that is the order that they respect.”

The Supreme Court earlier ruled against the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, in the case of the four vacant parliamentary seats.

The court in a 5 - 2 majority ruling said that the Speaker’s decision was unconstitutional.
