The Disable to access 5% of District Assembly Common Fund

Accra, June 3,GNA - People, who are physically challenged in Ghana, would be able to access five per cent of the District Assemblies' Common Fund (DACF) to better their lot soon.

Up to five per cent of the fund would be utilized to support initiatives of the physically challenged in the districts, according to the 2005 guidelines for the DACF.

Cabinet had already considered the 2005 proposed formula for sharing the DACF, which has been laid in Parliament awaiting its final scrutiny and approval.

Mr Joshua Magnus Nicol, Administrator, DACF, confirmed the guideline and said: "It was about time that we took special interest in our disabled population."

He told the Ghana News Agency that only duly registered Persons With Disability (PWD) would be considered.

According to the Administrator, a directive had long gone out that all public buildings or facilities that were financed by the DACF should be disable-friendly.

He said negotiations were underway to inch up the percentage of the DACF in order to make more funds available for the disabled.

Mr Nicol expressed optimism that persons with disability would access such funds to better their lot and escape that "spectre of pity and undesirability".
