The Extravagence of Mr. Speaker

Tue, 13 May 2003 Source: palaver

In the short period of 2 years that the Right Honourable Mr. Peter Ala Adjetey, former National Chairman of the NPP has been the Speaker of Parliament, he has cost the Ghanaian taxpayer dearly. The following represent some only of the unusual and extravagant expenditure that the State has incurred on his behalf. Of course they do not include the routine expenditure that the taxpayers incur also on his behalf such as salaries, allowances, fuel, accommodation, cooks, garden boys, stewards, free electricity, free water, free telephone, etc. These are only some of the extraordinary expenditures that Ghana Palaver has become aware of:

Item Amount in US$ Amount in ?

  • (1) Mercedes Benz E-Class (Rejected & in Parliamentary pool) US$70,000.00 ?595,000,000.00
  • (2) Mercedes Benz S-Class US$90,000.00 ?765,000,000.00
  • (3) Cost of medical treatment abroad & per diem in Baltimore, USA US$69,000.00 ?586,000,000.00
  • (4) Renovation of Official Residence (as per Ministry of Works & Housing Special Audit Report), Grounds, Gardens & Terrazzo works only -?600,000,000.00
  • (5) Rehabilitation, Refurbishment & Refurnishing of Office in Parliament House -?450,000,000.00
  • (6) Cost of newly designed Speaker’s Ceremonial Robe -?15,000,000.00
  • (7) Total US$229,000.00 ?3,011,000,000.00
Can you imagine what this amount of ?Three Billion and Eleven Million Cedis spent on one man could have done for the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital? And do you realise that at ?50 million per borehole, the amount could have constructed 602 (six hundred and two) boreholes for our rural communities? And all spent on one man in two years?

Asem beba dabi!
