The Rots in NUGS-Okudzeto, Boamah and Iddrisu to Blame

Press Release for Immediate Dissemination-8/20/12

For barely four years in government, the Concerned Students Coalition-USA Chapter (CNC) is yet to fathom the roles the Minister of Communication, Harruna Iddrisu, Deputy Minister of Information, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Omane Boamah who were all birthed by the National Union of Ghana (NUGS) have played to rescue the union from the constant mess.

There is no gainsaying that Messer Ablakwa, Iddrisu and Boamah were shot into the political limelight through NUGS but soon forgot their roots.

It is sad to note that these young men who have climbed the political ladder to this higher pedigree through NUGS have rather manipulated the union by planting candidates who are their favorites, and often resulted in the current confusions inherent in the union.

The CNC wants to underpin very clearly that Ablakwa, Boamah and Iddrisu cannot extricate themselves from the protracted rift in NUGS; it is about time they backed off from meddling in the affairs of the union.

In fact, CNC received with much joy when the news broke out that Ablakwa, Boamah and Iddrisu were among the government team nominated for ministerial positions with touted anticipation that NUGS will become a force to reckon with since it engendered these young men.

Contrary to their elevation, the NUGS have rather deteriorated and bereft with so much bickering and confusion.

The CNC utterly condemn the recent pandemonium that ensued at the NUGS congress in Kumasi and called for an urgent reassessment of the future of the union.

The CNC believes that the NUGS play a pivotal role in shaping the socio-economic and political future of our nation and must not be allowed to decay.

There is a living proof of the vital participation of NUGS in our national politics. It is rather unfortunate that political parties have nurtured so much interest in the union in the past and present culminating the current problems bedeviling the union.

The CNC want to make it unequivocal that the current NUGS leadership must tread cautiously and should not be swayed by money and vain promises of a political future.

They must realize that posterity will judge them if they allow their parochial interests supersedes the foundation upon which the union was formed. The importance of NUGS in shaping the country’s political thoughts should not be misplaced.

Since Ablakwa, Boamah and Iddrisu have woefully failed to rescue the union, we want them to step aside for the current congress members to figure out a lasting solution to the impasse. It is a humiliation to see NUGS members tear each other’s throat for political gains.

We call on the current leadership to guard against political manipulations and restore the dignity and sanctity of NUGS for posterity sake.
