The Director of Conflict Resolution for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has criticised the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, calling his proposal for an economic debate "suicidal."
Amaliba's comments come in response to Dr. Bawumia's challenge to the NDC's flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, for a live debate on the economy.
According to Amaliba, the current state of Ghana's economy, which he describes as "shambolic," renders any debate pointless and detrimental to Dr. Bawumia.
“The call for a debate is suicidal on the part of Dr. Bawumia and a complete waste of time. Suicidal because you don’t call for a debate on an economy that is so shambolic as we have," Amaliba stated during an appearance on TV3’s New Day on Friday, July 12, 2024.
Amaliba illustrated his point by referencing a biblical passage: “When Jesus said on the cross, ‘It is finished’…, this economy is finished. There is no economy as I speak to you. So, how do you debate on something which is not there?"
He further criticised the management of the economy under the current administration, highlighting the high prices in markets and shops.
“Go to the markets and shops, when prices are mentioned, people say ‘ei’ meaning prices are high. So, if you have an economy which is called everyone for himself, God for us all economy, and you are calling for debate on that economy, aren’t you committing suicide?" he added.
Amaliba also mentioned Fitch's description of Ghana's economy as a "borla" (trash) economy, pointing out that it all happened under Dr. Bawumia's oversight as Head of the Economic Management Team.
He recalled how Nana Akufo-Addo had convinced his party to accept Dr. Bawumia as an economic saviour, a promise Amaliba believes has not been fulfilled.
