What the country needs now is selfless citizens who are dedicated to the good of the nation, Mr. Alfred Ekow Gyan, Deputy Western Regional Minister, said on Tuesday.
He was inaugurating the 16th Annual Delegate Congress of the Association of Polytechnic Higher National Diploma (HND) Accountancy Students - Ghana, under the theme "Accountability in governance, a tool for national development: The role of HND graduate student" at Takoradi.
Mr. Gyan said: "I believe that you are the sort of accountants that the country is looking for who at these prime ages and are imbued with high sense of integrity, truthfulness, empathy and have love for the nation".
He said the country needed leaders who would not hide behind their official position, and instead of serving the nation, engage in dubious deals to plunge the country into economic dilemma and political volatility.
"I hope that you are ready to serve the nation in whatever capacity you may be called upon to serve the country after your tuition at the polytechnic", Mr. Gyan said.
Mrs Sylvia Oppong-Mensah, Registrar of the Takoradi Polytechnic, commended the government for its continued interest in polytechnic education.
She said accountability in government requires that public officials explained their decisions and actions to the citizens.
Mrs Oppong-Mensah said government accountability could be achieved through a number of mechanisms including political, legal and administrative mechanism designed to fight corruption and to ensure that public officials and civil and public servants were answerable and accessible to the people they serve.
