The Northern regional minister Salifu Saeed has blamed the regular tensions between the Konkombas and Chokosis in the Chereponi district on machinations of the “devil”.
According to him, the devil has taken over the area and therefore there is the need for religious leaders in the district to “invoke the ancestors” to restore calm.
“It is the devil that has taken over the area so we will consult the religious leaders to invoke the ancestors so that there will be peace in the area. There are a lot of things that are coming to the area this time,” he told Starr News Ibrahim Alhassan Tuesday.
The claim comes after the district police commander told Starr News the Police is overwhelmed with the development.
“I’m overwhelmed. Now both factions have become aggressive, attacking each other. When it comes to situation like this, you don’t know what to do. So I’m overwhelmed . I’m overwhelmed to a greater extent. We have more of the Konkombas coming around to attack the people of Chokosi. It’s surprising how this fight is just escalating. Government intervention is what we’re looking forward to now,” Chief Supt. Henry Amankwatia said.
In the recent clash, two persons have been confirmed dead and dozens of weak mud-houses have been burnt in the violence allegedly triggered by an attack on a Chokosi native of Togo who came last night to attend a pass out ceremony for her Ghanaian sister.
Meanwhile, the King of Dagbon Ya-Naa Abukari Mahama II, has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the ongoing conflict.
The Yaa-Naa is extensively worried about the deadly communal strife in that part of his traditional territory and has decided to intervene.
Secretary of the Yaa- Naa and a spokesperson at the Gbewaa Palace, Abdul Rahman Mohammed confirmed the King’s move to Starr News.
The Yaa-aa, according to the secretary, would select four top members of the Dagbon traditional council and dispatch them as a fact finding delegation to chereponi.
