Following the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, including both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The first-time MP, who died on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a short illness, has been remembered for his dedication and promise as a young legislator.
Among those who have paid tribute is Sammi Awuku, NPP Member of Parliament for Akuapem North.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Channel One Newsroom, Awuku stated that stress contributed to Kumi’s untimely death.
He described Kumi’s brief tenure in Parliament as one overshadowed by relentless legal battles, which he said robbed the young MP of the opportunity to fully serve his constituents.
Awuku noted that the ongoing court cases including a contempt conviction that was later overturned by the Supreme Court had taken a significant emotional and mental toll on Kumi.
“I can tell you for a fact that the gentleman was just stressed. Today, it is the High Court undermining his victory, and pulling him to the High Court. The next day, they are pulling him to the Supreme Court. My brother did not even enjoy the benefit of serving his people with a clean conscience and a clear mind,” citinewsroom quoted him as saying.
“He was burdened by litigation from the very start,” Awuku said, adding that the pressure of defending his legitimacy as MP deeply affected him.
“He never had the benefit of concentrating on his people. Every day, he was being dragged to court. It was very draining for him, and I quite remember one time he said to me; Commander, I am tired,” Awuku added.
According to Awuku, the late MP had also shared plans to launch a foundation aimed at supporting the people of Akwatia.
However, repeated legal challenges during his tenure delayed its rollout.
