Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, has openly stated that she acquired a firearm to protect herself against the incumbent Member of Parliament and Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Reflecting on the 2020 elections, Ms. Okunor accused the MP of threatening her life on four different occasions, lamenting the lack of police action following these incidents.

During a an interview on Citi FM's Eyewitness News on Wednesday (June 5), Ms. Okunor emphasized the need to carry a gun, saying, "I can best protect myself and not any other person against Hawa Koomson."

She recounted that during the last general elections, Ms. Koomson brandished a firearm at her multiple times.

Ms. Okunor noted that there were no arrests, interrogations, or investigations, and the cases she reported were ultimately disregarded by authorities.

“When we go back into the 2019-2020 elections, Hawa Koomson pulled a gun on me on four different occasions. No arrest was done, no interrogations, no investigations, nothing. The case just died. And since then, the police haven’t provided any form of protection for me,” she stated.

Ms. Okunor also addressed recent rumors of her arrest, clarifying that she was not detained following the violent incidents in Kasoa.

On June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service arrested three individuals, including Ms. Okunor, for unlawful possession of a firearm in Ofaakor, near Kasoa.

The trio were intercepted near the Electoral Commission's office while in a Honda CRV, from which a pump-action gun and ammunition were recovered.

The arrest occurred in the wake of a violent episode at the Electoral Commission’s office in Kasoa, which left four people injured.

During the incident, Ato Koomson, a son of Mavis Hawa Koomson, suffered a stab wound to the chest.
