Ashanti Regional Police Commander COP Ken Yeboah has admitted that some police officers engage in corrupt deals dragging the name of the service into disrepute.
Police officers in the country have been perceived to be bribe takers who extort monies from drivers and criminals whilst on duties.
COP Ken Yeboah discounted claims that drivers are obliged to give bribes to police officers to avoid being harassed.
‘There is corruption in the police service, and public perception affect us negatively because people do not have that confidence in us and so people will not provide information, people will not like to work with us. I think its a bad thing we don’t have to encourage. So when we get you, you are tried and dismissed,’ he said.
Speaking on Ultimate Breakfast Show with Lantam Papanko, he explained that it’s wrong for drivers on the roads to give monies to police officers on patrol duties.
He described drivers and police men who give and receive bribes as saboteurs of national development.
According to him, complaints always drag their feet in shaming and naming corrupt police officers.
‘Those who give the monies are not prepared to come forward to complain to us that this and that police officer took money from them. He knows that we will arrest him for giving money to the police officer so he won’t come, its an offence to give and take bribes, if you are caught we have to deal with you,’ he said.
The regional commander indicated that police personnel have been warned not to collect bribes saying any police officer caught engaging in corrupt practices will be dealt with.
‘More than three officers have been accused of extorting monies, they are going to be tried, if found guilty, they will not be spared,’ he cautioned.
He remarked that there are some police officers who have been doing their work diligently.
