The Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gary Nimako Marfo has categorically denied allegations that there is a plot to remove Kissi Agyebeng from his position as Special Prosecutor.

Speaking on The Forum on Accra-based AsaaseRadio on May 25, Marfo described the claims as “false” and lacking any merit.

“Anybody saying that the Jubilee House or His Excellency the President is behind a move or an attempt to kick out my own brother, Kissi Agyebeng, that statement is false; there is no merit in it as a matter of fact, it is not true,” Marfo asserted.

Gary Nimako Marfo, who emphasized his strong friendship with Agyebeng, argued that if there were any truth to the allegations, he would have been informed either through government sources or by Agyebeng himself.

“I would have been aware about this particular matter, either I will hear from government cycles myself or Kissi himself would have told me that there’s a suggestion that he should resign and he has refused to resign and therefore he’s now being hounded out of office. That suggestion has not come.”

He said allegations made by Martin Kpebu, who initially made the claims are malicious and lacks credibility.

“It is not true and the person who said it, that is Martin Kpebu, who made a statement, I’m telling you he has no credibility at all. I don’t know where he heard it from. I am saying that it is not true and the public might disregard all these things and let’s move on with our lives,” Marfo concluded.

President Akufo-Addo has forwarded a petition seeking to remove Kissi Agyebeng as Special Prosecutor to the Chief Justice.

The petition, dated April 30, 2024, was presented to the president by the former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, and was relayed to Justice Gertrude Torkornoo on May 6, 2024.

Amidu was reported to have cited procurement irregularities in the acquisition of vehicles for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and alleged misconduct involving judges and the administration of justice.

Additional accusations encompass the infringement of citizens' rights through arrests and detentions, breaches of the right to information, and the inappropriate appointment of staff to the office.

In accordance with Article 146 of the Constitution, the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, is currently assessing whether there is sufficient initial evidence to constitute a committee for Agyebeng's potential impeachment.

She has reportedly asked the Special Prosecutor to respond to the issues raised in the petition.
