The Auditor-General (AG) of the Republic of Ghana, Mr Daniel Domelovo has revealed the existence of an active attempt to intimidate and possibly remove him from office using falsehood peddled through agencies such as the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and the Daily Guide Newspaper, MyNewsGh.com reports.
According to him, although he is not above the law, he will continue to discharge his duties and only death will stop him.
In an interview on the Joy Super Morning Show monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Mr Domelovo revealed that that Daily Guide, in particular, promised to “strip him naked” when all he has done since assuming office is to expose both past and present audit crimes against the people of Ghana. “I still have my clothes on, I am telling Daily Guide,” he mocked.
“I think it is one of the intimidating principles or approaches being used but then I want to assure them that they can come and jail me we will not stop doing what we are doing,” he said boldly.
He was reacting to, among other things, EOCO’s investigations of alleged procurement breaches in the purchase of cars, which Domelovo said has nothing to do with his office. He said EOCO has invited some members of his office with the ultimate aim of getting to him, but even that will fail.
He explained to listeners the nuances of the said car's contract and why it is a “storm in a teacup”.
“So if you nullify the contract it cannot be paid for…if you cancel the whole process it cannot be paid for is that not it? So if you say pay for it means you have accepted it so any infraction therein has been rectified by PPA from my point of view so EOCO should go to PPA and find out why did they rectify it,” he explained.
“I don’t see why they are on the back of my staff. For the past two or three weeks, they have invited my deputies and several officers. I have said it time and again that I don’t fear any attacks on my office. Only death can stop me,” he warned.
Mr Domelovo encouraged all public office holders and civil servants earning beyond some threshold to learn from President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Bawumia by declaring their assets in line with the law.
Mr Domelovo so far enjoys strong public goodwill in his office. Almost all Civil Societies in Ghana and anti-corruption agencies have pledged their unflinching support for him.
