In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated that even though legalizing homosexuality is not on his government's agenda, a strong call by members of the society through agitation can cause the law banning it be amended.

Following the president’s comment which has generated a lot of controversies, the general public and some state actors have heavily criticised him, saying that his stance will encourage homosexuals in Ghana to gain grounds to protest.

General Secretary of the Christian Council, Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong who was preaching at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Immanuel Congregation at Madina, strongly urged politicians to desist from publicly endorsing same-sex marriage in the country.

He cautioned that politicians who would endorse same sex marriage should consider losing the 2020 elections as Ghanaians will vote them out.

“Any political party that decides to endorse homosexuality, this will be the last election in its history in the name of Jesus,” Rev. Opuni-Frimpong said.

Dr. Opuni Frimpong also called on the Christian Lawyers, Judges, businessmen and traditional rulers to unite and resist any attempt to legalise homosexuality in Ghana.

“…if we leave it alone in the hands of politicians we’ll be in trouble. The church, pastors, Christian Lawyers, traditional leaders, we must all come together and build what makes us unique as a people and let our parliamentarians and everybody know that even if whoever will give whatever to us, together the church and traditional leaders we say no! to same sex marriage,” he stressed.

Although government has denied claims that it intends to legalize same-sex marriage, the association of gays and lesbians in Ghana have congratulated President of the republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo for his "emphatic response" on the discrimination against homosexuals in Ghana.
