Three Armed robbers arrested at Ejisu

Ejisu (Ash), Mar.3, GNA - Some residents of Juaben near Ejisu on Tuesday arrested three members of a gang of armed robbers who attacked and inflicted cutlass wounds on Nana Kwame Akrasi, the Juabenhene's Abusuapanin at dawn and succeeded in robbing him of a large sum of money.

The three suspects, Kwabena Owusu alias Kodua 17, Akwasi Ketewa 22, both from Juaben and Patrick 19, from Effiduase who tried to bolt with eight million cedis and 2,500 dollars they forcibly took from the victim's house have been placed in police custody at Ejisu. A police source, who briefed the Ghana News Agency at Ejisu on Wednesday said, Nana Akrasi was awaken by a knock on his door at about 5.30 am.

The source said, immediately he opened the door, the robbers pushed him down, gagged and tied his two hands and demanded money from him in exchange for his life.

The police source said, Nana Akrasi, who is the Proprietor of Golden Gate Hotel in Kumasi, showed the suspects who had then pointed a sharp cutlass at his neck where the dollars were and they took it. Not satisfied with what they got, the suspects again demanded more money from the chief who showed them his brief case, which contained eight million cedis, which they also took.

According to the source, the robbers, who demanded 10 million cedis from him, then asked Nana Akrasi to sign a cheque for the remaining two million cedis to square up.

The police source said, it was in the course of signing the cheque that a friend who the chief was expecting that morning knocked at the door but he asked the robbers not to open it since they may be arrested and instead showed them a room to hide and asked them to untie his hands to enable him open the door.

The source said, as soon as Nana Akrasi opened the door, he shouted for help which attracted some youth in the vicinity who gave the robbers a good chase and succeeded in arresting three of them and handed them over to the Ejisu police.

The police source said, however, that one of the robbers managed to run away with the money and the police have mounted a search for the rest.

Meanwhile, Nana Akrasi has been admitted at the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital (KATH), where he is responding to treatment.
