Agona-Nyakrom (C/R), March 11, GNA - The police at Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region on Thursday restored calm to the town after arresting three Moslem youths at Nyakrom Zongo for allegedly assaulting one Mr Afreh, an incident, which nearly sparked off communal violence. Superintendent H. H. Afful, Nyakrom District Police Commander named the three suspects as Mohamed Ali, Hamza and Abu Ibrahim. He told the GNA at Nyakrom that the three were arrested followed an attack on Mr Afreh who had questioned Mohamed for defecating in a plantain farm near a public toilet.

He said on March 8 this year, at about 20:00 hours Mr Afreh reported to the police that he had lost a tooth following an attack on him by a lady and a young man.

Superintendent Afful said after police had issued a medical form to Mr Afreh to seek medical attention there were series of reports from individuals that some people in the Zongo community had assaulted them. The District Police Commander said thereafter about 100 youths converged at the Nyakrom Police Station on Saturday ostensibly to seek the permission of the police to attack the Zongo community. However, he said, with the help of the chiefs and some opinion leaders in the town the youths were advised to be calm.
