Three people have been hospitalized at the Awutu Senya Hospital following a scary accident at Awutu Amasa in the central region in the late hours of Monday.

A tipper truck loaded with sand on its way to Accra from the Cape Coast stretch of the road lost balance, veered off the road, pouring the entire sand on a nearby taxi which was loaded with passengers.

The taxi was entirely covered by the sand making it difficult for onlookers to rescue the three people on board including an 8 year old baby.

A quick and timely response by the police and the fire service saved the three from suffocating to death.

An ambulance was called to the scene to convey the three to the hospital and are said to be responding to treatment.

Confirming the news to Kasapa News Central regional correspondent Kwaku Baah-Achramfour, the Awutu Breku District Police Commander ASP Shadrack Amfo blamed the increasing number of accidents in the area on the old and poor road signs in the area.

He explained that the signs are flawed as they are not consistent with new settlement patterns on the area as they were installed at a time when there were fewer settlements along the road giving room for drivers to go beyond the required 50kmph mark.

Some drivers, he emphasised take advantage of the poor road signs to engage in acts of recklessness which end up claiming lives on the road.

ASP Shadrack Amfo indicated that replacement of the old road signs with new ones consistent with current settlement patterns coupled with speed ramps will help bring the menace down.

He also urged his colleague officers to be diligent on the road in ensuring that drivers go by the laid down rules in preventing avoidable accidents on the road.
