Asamankese(E/R) Feb. 14, GNA - Three feeder roads, rehabilitated at total cost of 600 million cedis for three communities in the West Akim District of the Eastern Region were commissioned at separate ceremonies on Friday. The roads, Owuram- Betom, which is 3.9 kilometres, Kwametia Junction to Kwametia 1.17 kilometres and Kwaku Sae-Brekumanso, 2 kilometres, were constructed under the Village Infrastructure Project(VIP) and funded by the IDA, IFAD and KFW.

The roads constructed by the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds(GCD) at Akwatia took three months to be completed.

Speaking at the ceremonies, the District Chief Executive for the area, Mr. Uman Amoah called on the communities to maintain the roads to ensure their long span, adding that the roads would also ensure the easy transportation of food stuffs and passengers to the marketing centres.

He asked the people to register when the new voters registration exercise begins on March 16 to enable them exercise their franchise. Mr. Amoah urged parents to send their children to school and invest in their education to enable them to become useful citizens in the future.

Mrs. Margaret Duku, VIP Project Co-coordinator commended the contractors for the completion of the projects on scheduled and added her voice for the people to cultivate the culture of maintenance. She stressed the need for the people to educate their children especially their girl-child instead of spending their monies on expensive things.

At Betom, Mr. Amoah gave a two-week ultimatum to the chiefs and people of the community to complete a six classroom block for the Presbyterian Primary school which is an European Union project started two years ago.

He expressed concern about the lukewarm attitude of the people towards the project and warned that he would sanctioned them if they failed to complete the project within the two weeks. The Assemblyman for the area, Mr. Mark Kwabla thanked the government for the road rehabilitation and pledged the support of the people to the government. Feb. 14, 04
