Thugs attack Kokobeng community

Kokobeng (Ash), June 19, GNA - The chiefs and people of Kokobeng near Kumasi, have appealed to the Police to bring to justice a group of people who stormed the community and caused mayhem.

Opanin Kwabena Opoku, the Spokesman said the group armed with deadly weapons assaulted the Krontihene, Nana Atta Yaw Akomea, Kwaku Ampofo, the local Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party and one Kofi Acquah.

Opanin Opoku, who made the appeal through the Ghana News Agency, said the one who led the attack had been identified and the Police should have no difficulty in causing his arrest.

Opanin Opoku said people in the town were living in fear, stressing: "This situation, we think must not be allowed. As law-abiding citizens of Ghana, we demand that we are protected by the state". He attributed the attack to a protracted land dispute between the Asona clan of Domeabra and Kokobeng.

The case was before a Kumasi High Court but had to be withdrawn following a directive by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene that all chieftaincy and land litigation in Asanteman should be taken out of court.

The case was consequently sent before the Asantehene who appointed some chiefs, comprising the Hiahene and Asemhene to resolve the dispute. He said the arbitration process was stalled following the death of Nana Kofi Gyasi, the Kokobenghene.

Opanin Opoku alleged that the attack was, "part of a grand scheme to intimidate and scare us away from what is legitimately ours".
