Mumford (C/R), Sept. 3, GNA - Six fishermen were hospitalised and four canoes with fish capsized following strong tidal waves at Mumford on Monday.
The boats were ferrying catch from vessels anchored off-shore due to the rocky nature of the coast line when they were caught in the tidal waves that knocked them against rocks.
Mr Kow Osafo-Kotu, 2007 National Best Fisherman who briefed the Ghana News Agency, appealed to the government to speed up construction of the break water it promised the people of the town.
Mr Osafo-Kotu said such incidents had become annual events, occurring between March and August and forced fishermen to migrate to Elmina, Sekondi-Takoradi and other towns for a greater part of the year to protect their vessels and canoes.
He attributed under development of the town to their annual migration which also affects education of their children. Mr Osafo-Kotu said when the Minister for Fisheries, Mrs Gladys Asmah, announced that the work on the break water would begin this month they were overjoyed and appealed to her to fulfil the promise.
