As Ghana prepares for its general elections on December 7, 2024, TikTok has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring platform integrity and combating misinformation.

The platform, a hub of creativity and engagement for millions in Ghana, has announced several initiatives in collaboration with the Electoral Commission of Ghana and civil society organizations to support accurate and transparent electoral processes.

This was contained in a statement issued on November 26, 2024, on its website. Below are details:

Safeguarding electoral information

TikTok has launched an in-app Election Centre to provide users with trusted and authoritative information about the elections. Developed in partnership with the Electoral Commission of Ghana and DUBAWA, the hub offers resources in English and links users to reliable sources. To further enhance its accessibility, election-related content will feature labels directing viewers to the Election Centre, ensuring easy access to verified information.

To foster an informed community, TikTok has also introduced reminders on election-related hashtags, encouraging users to adhere to platform guidelines, verify facts, and report misleading content.

Strengthening content policies

TikTok has ramped up efforts to enforce its policies against misinformation and harmful content. A dedicated Mission Control team, comprising election specialists across various departments, has been established to monitor and ensure platform integrity during the electoral period.

In the second quarter of 2024, TikTok removed 99.2% of election-related misinformation before it was reported. This success was attributed to advanced detection tools and collaboration with local experts and fact-checkers, including Code for Africa, who evaluate and label content for accuracy.

To tackle emerging challenges, TikTok has implemented measures against misleading AI-generated content (AIGC). The platform does not allow manipulated AIGC that could mislead voters or depict public figures endorsing political views without authorization. A partnership with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) further strengthens these efforts by enabling automated labeling of AI-generated content uploaded from specific platforms.

Promoting media literacy

TikTok has launched media literacy campaigns in collaboration with DUBAWA, featuring educational videos in English and Twi. These resources equip users with fact-checking skills, encouraging them to "stop and think" before sharing content. The initiative aims to empower the TikTok community to identify and counter misinformation effectively.

Tailored approaches for political accounts

Acknowledging the unique role of politicians, political parties, and news organizations in civic discourse, TikTok applies nuanced enforcement policies to their accounts. While violative content is removed as with any other account, additional measures, such as temporary posting restrictions, may be applied during the election period. TikTok also prohibits these accounts from advertising or monetizing on the platform to maintain impartiality.

Commitment to safety and integrity

TikTok's ongoing commitment to platform integrity includes a $2 billion global investment in trust and safety initiatives this year. As a space for creativity and connection, TikTok remains steadfast in its mission to combat misinformation and foster transparency, ensuring a safe environment for its Ghanaian users during this critical period.

The platform’s proactive approach underscores its dedication to building responsibly, equitably, and openly while supporting Ghana's democratic process.
