Cape Coast, March 1, GNA - Kofi Allotey, a 28-year-old timber contractor based in Cape Coast who defrauded a baker of 1.5 million cedis under the pretext of supplying her with flour, was on Wednesday fined 500,000 cedis by a Cape Coast Circuit Court.
Allotey, who pleaded guilty, would go to jail for 10 months in default of payment. Prosecuting, Inspector Henry Tanor told the court presided over by Mr Justice Tom Bentil that sometime in October last year Allotey went to Twifu Praso and introduced himself to the baker, Madam Cynthia Dapaah as a flour supplier.
Inspector Tanor said Allotey then told her he could supply her with flour, which she could pay for by instalments and later, left for Cape Coast. He said Allotey went to Madam Dapaah a month later and told her he was travelling to Accra to collect some flour.
As a result, she gave the amount for an initial supply of three bags of flour, but he was not seen again until on February four when he was spotted in Cape Coast and arrested.
According to the prosecution, Allotey has similar cases pending against him. In another development, a 27-year-old unemployed man was also sentenced to a fine of 500,000 cedis when he was arraigned for fraud and forgery.
Anthony Toku Baah Boateng, who pleaded guilty, will go to jail for 24 months if he fails to pay the fine. The prosecution told the court that in November, last year, Boateng forged the particulars and signature of his former girl friend, one Rita Aglah on a form from a consumer credit shop and collected a television set.
Boateng then issued two cheques totalling 122,334 cedis as part-payment to be cashed on December 19, 1999 and end of January 2000 but the cheques were dishonoured.
The credit shop, therefore, wrote to the girl whose particulars were on the form, and she made a report to the Police.
