Togolese jailed 10 years for abduction and defilement

A Tarkwa circuit court has sentenced a 25-year-old Togolese, to a 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 14 -year-old girl he abducted from Togo to Ghana.

Duameyo Coffie, alis Kwabena Togo was convicted on his own plea of guilty to child trafficking, abduction and defilement.

The facts of the case as presented by Chief Inspector Faustina Celestina Anaman, was that, the victim is a school dropout, while the convict is a labourer.

According to the prosecution, Duameyo and the victim are both natives of Atakpame in Togo.

The convict has been in Ghana for five years and resides at Kyeikrom near Asankragwa in the Amenfi West Municipal.

Chief Inspector Anaman said, in January 2019, Duameyo went to Atakpame and lured the victim to Ghana under the pretext of securing her a lucrative job in Ghana without the knowledge of the victim's parents.

She said the convict took the victim to Kyeikrom to live with him but failed to get her the job as promised.

The prosecution said Duameyo took advantage of the situation and had sex with the victim on three occasions in his room.

Inspector Anaman said the victim became pregnant and when she informed the convict, he gave her drugs to abort the pregnancy but she refused to take them.

She said the victim then pleaded with the convict to send her back to her parents in Togo and he promised to do so when he gets some funds.

The Prosecution said on April 1, 2019, victim managed to run away from the village and reported the case to the Sefwi-Bekwei police which led to the arrest of Duameyo.

She said the victim's medical report form revealed that she was six weeks pregnant.

Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed that even though, the police officer who investigated the case, Detective Sergeant Vida Anane Adjei of the Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DVVSU) of Asankragwa contacted the victim's parents in Togo to come for her they failed to show up.

Detective Sgt Adjei had to send the victim to her parents in Togo at her own expense.
