Togolese jailed for stealing

Asamankese, July 16, GNA - Kofi Kosu, a Togolese aged 22, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment in hard labour by the Asamankese Circuit court for stealing 19 full pieces of wax prints valued at 5.925 million cedis.

Kosu pleaded guilty.

Giving the facts of the case, Police Chief Inspector Joseph Idan , told the court, presided over by Mr Kofi Akrowiah, that the complainant, Madam Dora Aboagye, on July 11, this year, sent 19 full pieces of wax prints to the Akoroso market for sale.

On reaching the market, she left the bag containing the wax prints with her mother, a petty trader, who placed it by her wares. The Prosecutor said while the mother was busily attending to her customers, Kosu, and Asamankese based driver who was hovering around, took advantage of the situation to steal the bag but was spotted by a witness in the case who was standing by.

He said the witness followed Kosu to a short distance and raised alarm that attracted a number of people who gave Kosu a chase when he abandoned the bag and fled. Kosu was arrested and taken to the Police station together with the bag containing the wax prints where claimed that a man and a woman asked him to pick the bag for them but he could not identify them.
