The Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on both Christians and Muslims to live in harmony and tolerance to foster national peace.
He indicated that the Chief Imam’s symbolic visit to the Christ the King Catholic Church on Easter Sunday is testament of the Muslim scholar’s resolve to unite calling on all followers to emulate the gesture.
Speaking at the One Hundred Breakfast Lectures in Honour of the National Chief Imam, under the theme “Advancement of modern Ghanaian Society through Peace, Tolerance and Development” the VEEP admonished the two major religions not to take the freedom and peace in the country for granted.
“At a time the World is experiencing religious intolerance leading to the unfortunate killings of innocent people by extremists, Ghana is enjoying a great collaboration between the two leading religions in our country. As we heard few days ago, the National Chief Imam paid a remarkable visit to the Catholic Church in Accra. And a day after this historic visit, a group of Christians also paid the Chief Imam, a visit at his home. These were beautiful scenes and moments of pride for every Ghanaian. This partnership is key to the freedom of worship we enjoy in Ghana, as well as the peace in this country.” he told the gathering.
Meanwhile, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the UN office for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr. Ibn Chambas who was the keynote Speaker after the ceremony described the National Chief Imam as a Champion of Religious Tolerance and Inter-Faith dialogue.
