Pensioners advised against alcohol consumption, smoking

Apam (C/R), Dec. 31, GNA - Pensioners have been advised against the consumption of alcoholic drinks, smoking and engaging in excessive sex as such practices could have a bad effect on their health. Dr Ebenezer Ameka, Medical Superintendent of the Apam Catholic Hospital gave the advice when he addressed a Christmas party organised by the Gomoa District branch of the Ghana Pensioners' Association at Apam.
According to him too much sex could lead to stroke, while too much of smoking could also lead to cancer of the lungs, adding that taking alcohol in excess could also lead to hypoglycaemia. He said ailments like heart attack, stroke, blindness and kidney failure could be prevented if detected early through regular medical check-ups and advised them to ensure regular check-up of their health, adding, "old age, is associated with so many health problems". Dr Ameka advised them to take in more fruits and vegetables, ensure regular body exercise and void too much meat and fatty foods. He advised them not to think too much because it could lead to depression, insomnia and death.
Mr Frank Eshun, Chairman of the Association, who presided appealed to the management of the Apam Hospital to give pensioners preferential treatment when they visit the facility for medical attention.
