Toronto NPP Chairman Loses Run for Parliament

The Chairman of the Toronto-Canada Chapter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Osei Amoakoh was floored in his bid to secure the Party?s nomination for the Asokore-Effiduase Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

The incumbent Member of Parliament for the area, former Deputy Finance Minister Grace Coleman, popularly known as Obaa Yaa, polled 34 votes to beat a field of six challengers including Toronto resident Yaw Osei Amoakoh to retain her party?s nomination for the December 2004 Parliamentary Elections. Osei Amoako polled to second place with 15 votes, Francis Boakye Adjin, an Accra-based legal practitioner gathered 14 votes, Rockson Baah Achamfour had 4 votes, Alex Adomako, a private Consultant, one vote and J. K. Brampong who described himself as an Industrialist had no vote.

Osei Amoako has been in Ghana for the past couple of months actively campaigning with the hope to secure the nomination of the party for the forthcoming elections in December 2004. But in the end it was the popularity and previous good works of Obaa Yaa in the constituency that carried the day.
