The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has announced the authority's goal of making tourism the second largest income contributor to Ghana's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The authority's aim is to contribute to Ghana's 5.7% GDP growth, as reported by the Ghana Statistical Service, driving economic progress and development in the country.

Speaking at the Ghana-China Business Summit held on Monday, June 23, 2025, in Accra, Houadjeto highlighted the strategic importance of tourism in national development and called for stronger investment partnerships, particularly from China.

“One of the most important sectors in Ghana, our aim is to become the second largest income to support the GDP,” she stated.

“We want to make sure that as far as tourism is concerned, we take our rightful place.”

She emphasised Ghana’s competitive advantage in heritage tourism, pointing out that out of 48 recognised heritage sites in West Africa, Ghana alone accounts for 46.

“This tells you that when it comes to tourism and heritage, Ghana plays a key role,” she added.

She further urged potential investors to consider infrastructure development within the tourism space, assuring that Ghana is open and ready for investment opportunities.

The Ghana-China Business Summit aims to deepen bilateral relations and unlock investment potential across key sectors such as tourism, trade, infrastructure, and technology.
