Recently on November 25, 2024, the Ghana Police Service arrested 26 individuals for brandishing and indiscriminately firing toy guns in public.

Following the arrests, a new video has surfaced on social media showing some young men in Kumasi blowing balloons.

To create loud sounds as the balloons deflated, trumpets were attached to the tips of the balloons.

In the video, some of the young men proudly stated, "We have brought in a new trend," referencing their shift from toy guns to balloons.

The video was reportedly filmed in the Kumasi PZ Market.

Concerns raised over the toy gun trend

Security analyst Dr. Adam Bonah expressed concern over the use of toy guns, warning that it could have serious repercussions for the country's peace.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Dr. Bonah explained that replica guns in the wrong hands could easily lead to criminal activities.

"My point is that these are replica guns. It would be difficult to distinguish them from real firearms, and if they fall into the hands of the wrong person, they could be used for criminal purposes. We already have regulations banning the use of firecrackers. At what point do you determine if the gun is a toy or a real firearm? If we know who these young people are, the police should question them, investigate, and take action," he said.

Blogger Kwadwo Sheldon also raised similar concerns on his podcast, noting that such actions could lead to unintended harm.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaian celebrities, including Medikal, Shatta Wale, and others, have been seen in a viral social media video joining in on the balloon trend.

Details on the arrest of 26 persons firing the toy guns

Following the arrests of some 26 individuals for brandishing toy guns, the Ghana Police Service issued a press statement saying suspects are currently assisting with investigations and will be brought before the court to face charges.

The police also mentioned that special operations are underway to apprehend others involved in the growing trend.
